About gokova: Primarily a traditional Turkish resort, Akyaka has only in recent years become a new and much loved resort for foreign holiday makers. Still unspoilt, its new- found popularity has resulted in visitors returning each year especially during July and August when Akyaka is predominated by Turkish holiday makers from Istanbul, Ankara and Mugla. It is the summer vacation and at weekends out of season when Akyaka\'s tempo turns slightly upbeat! People from nearby Mugla retreat here from their towns busier activities and the number of young people from the universities come down to the beach -it\'s not unusual to see groups of students sitting around playing guitars and singing. Akyaka village became famous for its architecture which was introduced by Nail Cakirhan who won a \'Aga Han\' award in 1986. The houses are a combination of old Ottoman Empire and Greek style and maintains warmth in the winter and coolness in the summer. The original design has altered since and only retains a residue of the original architecture, nevertheless the village is very pretty especially with the abundance and perfumes of colourful flowers. It is said that because of the springs and many eucalyptus trees in and around Akyaka it makes a very therapeutic atmosphere. In fact many people from Mugla actually retire in Akyaka for health reasons -the air is definitely better! Akayaka is set midway between the \'county town\' of Mugla, and the bustling resort of Marmaris, both of which are about a 30 minute drive. Dalyan with its mud baths and the ancient city of Kaunos are only 45 minutes. For the more adventurous, the famous sites of Ephesus and Aphrodisias are approximately 3 hours drive. Private or group tours can be arranged. Akyaka has many restaurants, set both on the beach, in the village, and along the Azmak river. Although there is no bank, there are several ATMs, and credit cards are accepted in many of the shops and restaurants (as is sterling, which can also be exchanged with the owner). There are many beach activities available, including kayaking, windsurfing, kitesurfing, canoeing, sailing. Many boat trips are also available, both around the Bay of Gokova (including to the famous Cleopatra\'s Island), and along the 2 rivers that flow into the bay. There are also many well documented local walks, including the Eucalyptus walk - for which a private guide may be arranged. A special feature of the villas is local cookery lessons, available for a nominal amount.
